Founded in 1881 by William Robertson and brothers James and William Greenless, Bunnahabhain Distillery is located on Islay’s northeast coast near Port Askaig, by the Sound of Islay. Renowned for its predominantly unpeated single malt Scotch whiskies with a maritime-influenced character, Bunnahabhain also produces limited peated expressions, such as Mòine and Staoisha, which account for approximately 20% of its output. In 2023, CVH Spirits, a subsidiary of Heineken, acquired Bunnahabhain through its purchase of a 65% stake in Distell Group, the distillery’s previous owner.
Bunnahabhain’s annual production capacity is 2.5 million litres of pure alcohol, focused exclusively on single malt whiskies. The distillery combines traditional craftsmanship, including the use of large washbacks for fermentation, with modern upgrades, such as an £11 million investment from 2019 to 2021. This investment included a new visitor centre, opened in 2021 and improvements to production facilities, enhancing efficiency and tourism appeal. CVH Spirits’ global distribution network supports Bunnahabhain’s presence in over 30 countries, with key markets in the United States, Japan and Europe.
